On February 17, the first “Biodiversity on the Southern Coast” symposium was held at the Magdalena Training Center (CEFORMA) in Escuintla. Organized by Ingenio Magdalena and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the event created a platform for dialogue among institutions working to protect biodiversity in the region (government, private sector, communities and international organizations).
ICC contributed with the presentation “Biodiversity in the Sugarcane Agro-landscape,” delivered by biologist Fernando Rivera, who shared findings from biodiversity studies conducted along Guatemala’s southern coast. The studies focused on species identification, conservation status evaluation, and the development of management recommendations for biodiversity within productive landscapes.

As part of the event, Gabriela Ponce, Director of the WCS Guatemala Program, highlighted the importance of building a shared vision: “It is time for us to find and contribute on a common focus guided toward clear, tangible, and measurable goals” she emphasized. She also noted that “we hope this will be the beginning of a very fruitful relationship and that we can contribute to the goals we have set as a country.”

This first symposium marks an important milestone in regional coordination efforts, establishing itself as a platform for exchanging knowledge, strengthening capacities, and aligning actions in support of biodiversity conservation along Guatemala’s southern coast. At ICC, we reaffirm our commitment to continue generating scientific knowledge and promoting sustainable practices that contribute to the conservation and integrated management of ecosystems in Guatemala.
