Community Exchange Allows Integration of Knowledge on Disaster Management and Volcanic Risks

March 20 , 2025

This week, the second of four exchange tours with community leaders was held as part of the IXCHEL project. This activity was conducted so that attendees could learn about the volcanic territory and the complexity of the activity of the Fuego volcano, and so that they could integrate this knowledge into training processes that allow the Local Coordinators for Disaster Reduction (COLRED) to better understand the impacts of volcanic activity.

The tour was organized by the ICC with the support of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and the municipal risk management offices of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa and Masagua, in Escuintla. More than 140 people from 20 communities in the municipalities of Escuintla, Masagua, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, and San Pedro Yepocapa joined the tour.

The tour covered the main ravines that drain into the Achiguate, Guacalate, and Pantaleón rivers, allowing participants to identify the dynamics of the lahars and the associated impacts in different areas of the territory. These tours aim to strengthen the capacities of local communities to face challenges related to volcanic activity. By better understanding their environment, it is expected that they can implement more effective measures to mitigate risks and protect their communities.
