In March, a field visit was conducted in the Madre Vieja River basin, covering the departments of Escuintla and Suchitepéquez. The purpose of the activity was to validate the needs related to the protection and conservation of water resources, previously identified in participatory workshops with stakeholders in the watershed. More than 40 representatives from the public sector, local governments, private sector, communities and the regional technical coordinator of the Central American Integration System (SICA) participated in the visit.
The input obtained during this activity will make it possible to identify projects and investment options for planning and improving water resources and promoting governance with a watershed approach. Collaboration among the various stakeholders seeks to strengthen sustainable water management in the region, ensuring its availability and quality for future generations.
Organized by the Vice Ministry of Water of the Ministry of Environment (MARN), the activity is part of the efforts to comply with Governmental Agreement No. 19-2021. This work is being conducted with funds from the ARAUCLIMA program of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), under the coordination of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) and the SICA, which selected the ICC for the implementation of the project.
