In April, we welcomed students from the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG), South Campus, and the Northern University Centre (CUNOR) of the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. Their visit aimed to deepen their understanding of global challenges such as climate change, water management, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The visits included fieldwork and theoretical analysis, reinforcing the education of future professionals in key areas for sustainable development.
Twenty-five students from the university technical program in Agricultural Production for Export, along with their professor, participated in a tour organized by UVG. The main topics covered were carbon footprint, emissions mitigation, and the effects of climate change on agriculture. This experience allowed students to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications, essential for their specialization in a sector that is key to the national economy.
The following day, 65 students from the Environmental Management Engineering and Geology programs at USAC CUNOR visited a weather station run by the ICC and the Coyolate River in Escuintla. During the visit, they analysed the use of climate data for environmental management and conducted river flow measurements —an essential tool for water planning on the south coast of Guatemala. These activities highlighted the importance of applied research and interdisciplinary collaboration in facing today’s environmental challenges.
At the ICC, we take great satisfaction in contributing our local expertise to the academic development of Guatemalan students.
