The Annual Summit of the 20x20 Initiative Promotes Sustainable Landscapes in Latin America

April 11 , 2025

On April 9 and 10, the Annual Summit of the 20×20 Initiative and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration in Latin America and the Caribbean was held in Puerto Varas, Los Lagos Region, Chile. Under the theme “Multifunctional Landscapes for Human Well-being,” the event brought together government leaders, private investors, and technical partners from across the region to discuss environmental restoration strategies. The ICC participated as a partner of the 20×20 Initiative and as a representative of Guatemala’s National Restoration Roundtable.

During the summit, attendees worked toward three key objectives: strengthening intersectoral collaboration between the environmental and agricultural sectors to foster sustainable food systems; helping countries achieve international goals related to ecosystem restoration; and accelerating project implementation by attracting public and private financing. These goals aim to promote nature-based solutions as fundamental pillars to address environmental and climate challenges.

The event not only highlighted the importance of restoring landscapes to build more resilient ecosystems but also emphasized the central role of regional cooperation and investment in ensuring human well-being and ecological balance in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The 20×20 Initiative was launched in 2014 in Lima, Peru, as a country-led effort to reverse land degradation in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the aim of protecting and restoring 50 million hectares of forests, farms, grasslands, and other landscapes by 2030. The ICC has been a partner of this initiative and has coordinated actions with WRI since 2015.
