On June 25, the community of Canoguitas in Nueva Concepción, Escuintla, hosted a specialized workshop focused on the rescue and management of forest genetic resources under community-based management frameworks. The event gathered 21 women leaders from the community, who enhanced their technical skills in identifying seed trees, seed collection, and storage. The workshop also incorporated ancestral knowledge and traditional techniques based on lunar phases, emphasizing local wisdom as a vital component of sustainable forest management.
During the session, representatives from the National Forestry Institute (INAB) shared technical criteria for selecting seed trees, along with valuable information on pre-germination processes and the proper use of seed collection equipment. Additionally, the 2025 Mayan Forest Calendar was introduced as a tool to guide communities on the optimal times for forestry activities in accordance with lunar cycles.
The following day, June 26, an experience exchange was conducted between members of the Local Mangrove Committees of Tiquisate and Nueva Concepción. Held at the Tahuexco mangrove nursery, participants gained first-hand knowledge of the establishment and management of this type of nursery. Covered practices included seed germination, substrate preparation, general care, and seed collection techniques for buttonwood mangrove seeds and red mangrove propagules.
These activities were made possible through funding from the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), as part of the project “Conservation of native species seeds as a tool for forest landscape restoration,” promoted by the GLFx network on Guatemala’s southern coast. The project aims to raise awareness among local communities about the importance of conserving forest germplasm and to promote ecosystem restoration through the use of native species.
