El Salvador advances the development of a management plan for the Lempa river basin

February 11, 2026

On January 22, the Somos Río Lempa Conservation and Restoration Program held a multisectoral workshop aimed at developing a shared vision for the formulation of the Lempa River basin management plan, a strategic instrument that will guide conservation and restoration actions over the next 20 years. The event brought together representatives from government, the private sector, civil society, and academia to strengthen water security and promote sustainable development in the region.

During the workshop, participants discussed capacities, gaps, and challenges related to climate change adaptation, natural resource management, and water governance. The methodology facilitated dialogue, identified shared priorities, and advanced the development of a conceptual framework for integrated basin management.

ICC shared its experience in developing projects related to climate change adaptation and mitigation in El Salvador, highlighting the importance of integrating science, community management, and interinstitutional collaboration.

This activity is part of the initial phase of the “Somos Río Lempa” program, an initiative supported by the Government of El Salvador, the United States Government, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), FIAES, and other strategic partners. Through these joint efforts, the Lempa River basin is emerging as a model for evidence-based climate action and multisectoral coordination.

The Lempa River is El Salvador’s main river and one of the longest in Central America. It originates in the mountains of Chiquimula, Guatemala, briefly crosses southern Honduras, and flows more than 360 kilometers through El Salvador before emptying into the Pacific Ocean.
